AUCKLAND SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS.
AN EVENING WITH. WAGNER.
On Saturday evening, the Auckland' Society of Musicians held their first musical evening of the season at St. Andrew's Hall, Lower Symonds-street. There was a very large attendance of guests the hall being filled throughout. The special theme provided for the evening's entertainment was Wagner's great masterpiece '■Tannhauser. - ' and the contributing artists are to be congratulatd on their excellent rendering of ; this most difficult composition. The vocal numbers -were by Madame Wielaert, as Elizabeth and Venus; Miss Frieda Rosewarne, a young shepherd: Mr John Carter. Tannhauser; and Mr Barry Coney, Herman and Wolfram yon Eschinbach". Each of these artists displayed remarkable ability in execution, and it were indeed using a. mild term to say that the audience appreciated their efforts. The termination of each scene was the signal for a burst of applause from the delighted listeners, and. at the conclusion of the entertainment, a hearty vote of thanks was given to the president of the society. Herr Johan Wielaert. and the contributing members. Herr Wielaert, in the intervals between the scenes, provided brief explanatory descriptions, relative to the events and dialogue to follow, and also acted as accompanist, giving, in that capacity, most brilliant execution to the famous "Tannhauser March." The society indeed deserves unstinted praise for its work in the direction of familiarising Aucklanders ■with classic music in general, and all who were present at Saturday's entertainment will watch for the announcement of the next concert with keen expectation.
