BIRTHDAY HONOURS.
SIR JAMES MILLS. ' SIR W. S. GILBERT. ART AND LETTERS HONOURED. (By Cable—Press Association.—CopyrSgnt.) LONDON, June 28. The following Birthday honours have been gazetted:— PEERS. Sir James Kitson, P.C., M.P., and ex-Lord Mayor of Leeds. Sir James Blyth (member of executive of British Empire League, and vice-president of Royal Statistical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts*. Sir Samuel Montagu, DX., F.S.A. (head of the banking firm of Samuel Montagu and Company, London). Dr. Alexander Feckover, JLEJX, F.SA.., FX.S., F.R.G.S. (Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire). PRIVY COUNCILLORS. Three new Privy Councillors have been appointed, including the following: — Mr. Robert Spence 'Watson, solicitor (formerly President of the National Liberal Federation). Mr. Eugene Wason, M.P., who visited New Zealand in 1896. BARONETS- - There are eleven new baronetcies, including the following:— Sir Wm. Furdie Treloar (Lord Mayor of London). K.C.M.G. Vice - Admiral Sir Wilmot H. FawJses (commanding the Australasian Squadron). KNIGHTS BACHELORS. • The list includes thirty-three Knights, including the following:—Mr. James Mills (managing director
of the Union Steam Ship Co.). Mr. 'Waiter J ernes (Agent-General for and formerly Premier of West Australia). Br. James Donaldson (Vice-Chan-cellor and Principal of the University of St. Andrew's, and author of various educational and religious works). Mr. W. S. Gilbert (the well-known librettist). Professor Hubert Yon Herkomer, B~A. Mr. W. Q. Orchardsosi, R.A. Professor Jolm Rhys (Professor of Celtic at Oxford University). The majority of the others are organisers of the Liberal party. C.M.G. Dr. Wollaston (Comptroller of the Commonwealth Customs). Mr. John. Henry (formerly Treasurer of Tasmania). COMPANION OF THE IMPERIAL SERVICE ORDER (F. 5.0.). Hon. Mr. Langford, late a Supreme Court Judge in Fiji. A NEW ORDER The King has established a new Order, carrying a special medal, for distinguished service in India. SIR JAMES MILLS, Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union S.S. Co., is nearly sixty years ot age, having been born on July 30, 1847, and was the third son of Mr Wni. Mills, who was Collector of Customs at Dunedii, Auckland, and Christchurch, and who retired from service in 1875, and died 25 years later. He worked for the firm of Messrs MeAndrew and Co-, Dunedin, as a youth, but a year later he joined Mr John Jones, whose shipping branch was subsequently converted into the Harbour Steam Company. Mr Mills became manager of this company, which traded from Dunedin to neighbouring ports, in 1869, and in 1875 the Union Company was formed for the purpose of acquiring the interests of the Harbour Steam Co., and extending its operations. Mr Mills was appointed managing director, and has retained the position ever since. He held a seat in the Otago Provincial Council up till the abolition of provincial government, and in 18S7 was elected member for Port Chalmers on the death of the Hon. Jas. Macandrew. In 1893 he was defeated by the Hon. J. A Millar, and since then has not sought to re-enter public life.
