A paragraph from our Parliamentaryreporter in our yesterday's issue, with respect to the drainage of Piako Swamp, states that the £6000 voted last session was not expended because of a failure of the excavating plant imported. It appears that the machine was never given an opportunity from a variety of causes to start on the work, which is similar to drainage schemes for which it has beer* successfully used throughout America.
The ferry steamer Britannia broke down off the reef at Northcote yesterday •afternoon. She had just left the Northcote wharf for Auckland, and the passengers on board had an anxious time until the Albatross from Auckland came alongside and took the Britannia in towto the Birkenhead wharf, where she was made fast for the night. The Britannia was placed on the company's slip at Devonport to-day for overhaul.
