A BETTING CASE. I NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. The judgment of Mr. Justice Cooper in the appeals by bookmakers ag-ainsi convictions in ihe S.il. Court for bet tin;: at the Christmas meeting was delivered to-day. The principal gound for appeal on law was as to the validity ot i the borough by-law to prohibit beti tins". In an exhaustive judgment, the Court held that the Borough Council had power by this by-law to prohibit the carrying on of the business of bookinaking at j all times, upon the. reserve, arid, .therefpje i during a race meeting. The appeal wa- J ; dismissed, with £7 7/ costs against api pellants.

At the Police Court to-day, Charles I ' Dunn and Frank Morrah. alias James I I Morrah, were charged with having as- ; . vaulted and wounded Gustav Grenberg. ' The evidence of Grenberg was that on I the night of May 4 he went to Dunn 1 : j place, in Elle'a Avenue, where, the two j accused and fourteen others were piny- [ ing two-up.
