WOODTILLB RACES. (By Telegraph-—Ptess Aiseelatloal)' WOODVILLB. "Wednesday. Tie first day of the Summer Meeting of: the Woodville Jockey Club commenced today under peendar climatic conditions. There was a heavy' downpour of rain on the previous day , , but this morning broke beautifully fine.and continued so until mid-day, when heavy rain fell, which lasted for the first four races. It then cleared up and remained beautifully fine for the rest, of the day. The attendance of the general public was very satisfactory, and speculation n-as brisk. The sum of £7086 passed through 'the totalisator, which is £1252 better than for the corresponding day last year. The results are 06 follow: — . Woodville Handicap.—Submarine 1, Operetta 2. Paritutu 3. Scratched: Ngatarna. Nova, - Slaliaranui, Montigo, Mataarl. This was a magnificent race. At the distance most of the horses were in line and all appeared to have a chance. Near the post Submarine drew out and won by a length. Time, 2.11 2-5. Dividends, £3 5/ and £1 4/. Flying Hack Handicap. — Merriwing 1, Miss Adeline 2, Lady Beresford 3. Scratched: Wailethe, Te TJira. Saga, Ruatamata. Golden Eagle. Mairli. Corazon. Blue Klver. Pixie. Won by two lengths. Time, 1.18 2-5. Dividends, £11 4/ and £4 15/. Borough Handicap. — Coxswain 1, Jolly Friar 2, Riflemald 3. A beautiful summer's day favoured this club for their meeting, which was attended by abont 1000 people, including a fair number from Auckland, and a largo number on horseback, and vehicles from the surrounding districts. The track was in fine order, and the starting good. The races were got thronsh in fine time for the return by the special train to Auckland, reaching town at 9.15. Tae following are the- results:— Handicap Hurdles. 1J mile.-i-Stepney. 9-9 (Merchant), 1; ' Geologist, 10J2 (Hose), 2. Frenchman, 10.0, and Sophia, 11.3, also started. ' Stepney and Geologist drew right away from the others, the former winning by two lengths. A protest for alleged interference -nras dismissed. Betting: Evans Stepney. 2 to 1 ©eologiet. Time, 2.54. Maiden Plate, six furlongs.—Powhiri, 5.4 (Buchanan), 1: Lunette. 9.0, 2; Hero, S. Also started: Dorothy, Noklnokl, Anna Lombard, Etonea. Betting was evens on Fowhiri, which came away In the straight and won by three lengths. Time, 1.20. Cup. 1J mile.—Bromide, S.O (Buchanan), 1: Kola Nip. 8.5 (Cress). 2. These were the only starters. Kola Nip led till four furlongs from home, -where Bromide took charge, and won by six lengths. Betting: 2 to 1 on Kola Nip, 2 to 1 against Bromide. Publicans' Purse, six furlongs.—Dunetta,' 7.12 (W. Chaafe), 1: Stepney, 7.5 (Brady), 2, These were the only starters. Lnnetta won by three lengths. Time, LlB. Bettiug: 5 to 4 on Stepney, evens Lunetta. Hack Race, seven furlongs.—Leonotte, 10.0, (Mr F. Tonge). 1; Wellington, 10.0. 2. These were the only starters. Leonett" won by a furlong. Betting: 5 to 1 on Leonette. Waingaxo Handicap, one mile.—Geologist, 8.5 (Crese), 1; Lunetta, SS (Ts\ Chaafe), 2; Bromide, 9.1, 3. Dorothy also started. Lunetta and Bromide carried on the rcnnuig; until a. furlong from home,. when Geologist shot up and won by two lengths. Time, 1.46. Betting: 5 to 1 Geologist, evens Bromide. Flying , Handicap, flve flarlonfes.- —Keep Step, 7.13 (Buchanan), 1; Kola Nip, 8.7 (Cress), 2; Stromness, 7.3. 3.
