NOT WITH ANGELINE.
The distance from the tower at Westminster, -where Big Ben dwells, to the entrance of the Aquarium at Brighton, is 52J miles by the road, and there is nothing of the cinder track about the route the pedestrian must adopt to get from one to the other by the recognised route. The average man desiring to get from London to Brighton Avould, no doubt, prefer to spend an hour in the train, but there are some people who are fond of walking, and over two score of this brand of humanity tried Hast Saturday to see how quickly they could cover the 52£ miles with the aid of "Shanks' pony." In April, 1904, TE. Hammond, of the Blackheath Walking Club, completed the trying up and down course '"twixt London and Brighton in 8 hours 26 minutes 2-5 seconds — painfully accurate are these athletic folk!—and quite recently i small unit of gallant frontiersmen took 14 hours to do the same distance over the same road on horseback! On Saturday Hammond tried to beat his own figures, but though he walked in great form and finished second in the race, "time" beat him by many minutes, and was beaten in turn by that splendid long-distance pedestrian, J. Butler, of the Polytechnic Earners. Butler has many fine performances on road and jmih, to his
credit, but on Saturday he eclipsed them all by walking, fairly and squarely, 52 £ miles in 8 hours 23 minutes 27 seconds —a rate of over 6£ miles per hour and an average speed of 9 minutes 38 seconds per mile. Butler's path record for 50-miles ie 7hrs 52min 27sec, which means a. 9min 27 sec per mile gait, but on Saturday he had to do a longer journey and to negotiate stiff hills, and, in parts, roads ivith loose surface. Hammond finished second in Shre. 52min 14 sec. and Jacobs, of the Polytechnic, Mas third in Shrs 50miu 13 sec, whilst fourteen other competitors finished inside 10 hours, and seven more within 11 hours. Cramp in the legs forced Butler to stop several times during the last fevr miles of the walk, but the last mile was covered in a little over seven minutes. He was not "walking home with Angelinc."
