Meddings, Inspector of Telegraphs, arrived .from the South by the Ivaravva this morning. • Dr. and Mrs. Chenhall, of Sydney, who have been doing the round trip to the arrived, at Auckland by the J^ n P " Ltlke > a member of Wellington City Conneil, who has been on a trip Home, is due to arrive by the V entura next week from San Francisco. The visit to this country of the Hon. William Jennings Bryan, who is likely to contest the American Presidential election of 1908, has been postponed but not abandoned. Mr. H. W. Were, who has for the past lew months been acting manager at the Manaia branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed accountant at JNew Plymouth, and commenced his new duties on Monday. The Governor, lord Plunket, -will perform the unveiling ceremony in connection with the memorial to fallen soldiers at Dunedin on the 29th inst,, and on the following day he -will visit Port Chalmers. Mr. R. L. Skeen, Chief Magistrate for the Friendly Islands, arrived from Tonga by the Navua yesterday afternoon on a visit. Mr. Skeen is an old Aucklander, and he was warmly welcomed by many friends. Miss Yosper, of Waitara, who has volunteered and been accepted for Methodist work in New Guinea, was farewelled by the Waitara congregation on Tuesday evening. She is the first Taranaki lady to volunteer for this mission. 1 Captain W. Nicholson is leaving for Nelson to-morrow, to bring the oil launch Vanoro, which has been purchased by Mr. Lindsay Cooke, to Auckland. Mr. Cooke will go down to Nelson oil Sunday to inspect his purchase before she leaves for Auckland.

Miss Helene Podor has returned to Ghristehurch after having had a very successful time in London and Paris, -where she had a good deal of her work accepted. She has also been deputed to •write on New Zealand subjects to some London papers, especially concerning the jSxhibition. .

Mr. C. E. Briggs, of the Government [Audit Department, and at one time manager of the " CShristehurch Press," died at Picton on Tuesday night at the age of 61 years. He was spending a short holiday at Picton to recuperate after an operation, his death taking place very suddenly. He leaves a widow and four children.

The Hon. Jas. McGowan, Minister for Justice, returns to "Wellington to-day from Christchurcli, and the Minister for Lands (the Hon. It McNab) will reach Palmerston to-morrow night, and on Saturday morning -will visit the Makareao lime-kiln. Afterwards he proceeds to Gore, where he intends staying a few da vs.

Brigadier Albiston, commandant'in the Korth Island for the Salvation Army, arrived by the Sarawa.from the South tliis morning. To-night he conducts a meeting at the Albert-street Barracks, and to-morrow he will be present at the united picnic at Lake Takapuna, while in the afternoon he officiates at a wedding. He expects to return, to Wellington on Tuesday next.

An early arrival in the colony passed away rather suddenly at the Auckland Hospital on Saturday last, in the person of Mrs. Duff, widow of the late Mr. John Duff, of Auckland. The deceased arrived from England in the ship Royal Charlie, about forty-live years ago, and with the exception of an interval of about seven years spent in Wellington, she has resided in. Auckland since her arrival. Three sons and three daughters survive her, all residents in Auckland. The. funeral took place at Waikemete on Tuesday, the Rev. T. A. Norrie, of Pokeno, officiating.
