DEERING DISCOVERED.
DLD NOT COMMIT SUICIDE., A young man named Edward Deering, who caused a slight sensation last September by leaving his coat on a breastwork with some papers attached stating that "he had drowned himself because he was sick of life," appeared in the Police Court this morning to answer for his escapade. One of the two notes which were fastened to the coat, read as follows:—"I, a lad, Edward Deering, drowned myself over this wharf this night September 16, 1906. I have reason to do it because some person has been ruining my name and running mc down to the lowest. I am 20 years of age, and a member of the Auckland Central Mission. If anyone wishes to know why I have done this you will find out full particulars from Miss , of street, Auckland. My wish is that my mother should know. Miss has her address." It appears that Deering carried out his intention of jumping into the water, but the immersion evidently brought him to his senses, and he made his way ashore, and went off leaving his coat with its strange messages. He .was remanded to appear on Monday.
