THE GOLDFIELDS.
CROWN MINES EETURNi*. £4762 FROM 2143 TONS. The New Zealand Crown Mines, Ltd., crushed and treated 2143 tons of ore during the month of October for a return of bullion valued at £4762. This is the highest return for the present year, the ore being of better grade than that treated up to August. Champion Minos. Ltd. (November 3).— During-the past week the maiu face in tlie low level has been extended a further distance of lift. The country now being penetrated is of a firm and favourable description, with numerous flinty veins In it. The hands driving the crosscut on the lode have driven a distance of 7ft for the week. The lode is still maintaining its size, abont 3ft 6in. The last 3ft have now been compacted, as previously, and we have seen no gold in the stone; but by pounding and washing fair prospects are obtained. The country encasing tie lode is all that can be desired.
New Ona. —No chance of any importance has taken place since last report The hard rock still prevails, and strong iron seams are more noticeable. The dip of the country at present from us is more decided., indicative that a change for the better may bo met with at any time. Fourteen feet was driven for the week, making a total of. 161 ft. Rising Sun.—During the week the extension of tlw northern drive on the hanging wall reef has been continued. The country on the walls of the reef, tiiough of a good class for sold, is rather tight for speedy progress being made: A total distance of 86ft has been driven svnee starting. A portion of the reef was broken down to-ti.iy; it maintains its size and favourable appearance, and a few colours ol line gold was seen in the quartz broken.
