A four-roomed cottage in Taonnistreet, owned by Mrs. Hansen,, and unoccupied, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. The insurance amounts to £75 in the Alliance.

CARTERTON, this day. /In the Magistrate's Court this morning, Geo. H. Fairbrother, charged on the information of the Law Society with, acting as a conveyancer contrary to the provision? of the Law Practitioners Act, was fined by Mr W. P. James £5 and costs, £5 11/- Leave to appeal was given.
LUTTEHWOETH SALVAGE CLAIM.
WELLINGTON, this day.
The barque Lutterworth which waa dismasted in Cook Strait last month, waa abandoned and towed into Wellington two days later, is still in the possession of the Collector of Customs, as receiver of wrecks. The owners wish to sell the vessel, but the salvors object, as they; ■wish the question of salvage to be settled by the Admiralty Court. -The receiver of wrecks has been advised by his solicitors that, under the circumstances, he cannot, sell the barque, but may release her upon getting a bond from the owners to settle the salvage claims. The owners have agreed that the Union Company is entitled to £100 for rescuing the officers and crew of the dismasted vessel.
GOOD'ARTILLERY SHOOTING.
WELLINGTON, this day.
The Petone naval garrison artillery shooting from the Ngahauranga forts itt connection with the challenge shield competition, put up a splendid record at a range of three miles. Captain -Freeman's battery scored twelve hits out of twelve shots, while lieutenant Ellis' battery scored S hits out "of 12 shots.
.' CDLVEEDEN ESTATE.
CHHRISTCHUECH, Tuesday. The Government recently received a number of requeste from persons wishing to take up land, asking that the Government should acquire the Gulverden Estate for the purpose of closer settlement. The Hon. E. McNab is now inspecting the estate, with the view of deciding whether he will recommend the Government to acquire it under the Land for Settlements-Act..
DIVORCE CASE.
DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
The divorce case, Hopgood v. Hopgood and Williams, husband's petition, was retried to-day. The second jury, by a three-fourths maforityj founu. in favour of the petitioner, and a decree nisi was grafted.
NEW CATHEDRAL JTOK DUNEDIN.
DUNEDIST, Tuesday,
At the Anglican Diocesan Synod it was reported that up to the end of Octooer £3760' had beeii received for the proposed new cathedral, and nearly A4OOO more promised, including the grant of the Societj- for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge.. London. The sum of £10,000 is required to enable the bequest of the late Mr. W. Harrop to fee claimed.
CANTERBURY SHOW.
CHBJBTCOTUKCH, Tuesday.
The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Exhibition four days* show opened at the show grounds, Addington, to-day. The entries are very large, the details being as follows, the 1905 entries placed first, being , given, for ' purposes of comparison:—Competitions, 71 and 110;, sheep, 732 and 1070; cattle. 248 and .'SSfI: horses.. 544 and 658; pigs, 77 and S7; dogs 16 and Ifi; dairy; produce, dressed poultry, cured and preserved meats, 161 and 207.
