(From our Own correspondent.) WHA.NGAREI. Saturday. Tlie Kamu Axemen's Carnival was held in Mr i-'uoie's paddock, Kamo, on 'I'hursday afternoon. There was an attendance of upwards of GW. The exUibltioii of chopping and sawing was generally good. The champion axeman. C. W. Casey, was amongst the competitors. Unfortunately, owing to the logs for 4ft saw handicap being smaller than should hays been, It was found necessary to readjust the conditions. lhe following are the results: —Maiden standing chop, loin log: M. The Whangarei Brass Hand's moon light excursion, held on Thursday, was very successful, over 100 persous takiug advantage ot the trip. The excursionists left the town wharf and returned at 10.30. The moon was somewhat shrouded with clouds during the greater portion of the trip, but before the return home the clouds had cleared away. Duriug the trip the band provided some excellent music, and a most enjoyable trip was the result. The excursionists were taken around Lilmestone Island, but on account of the tide falling U was considered advisable not to land. On Thursday evening a number of friends gathered together at the Municipal Buildings, when a social function took place, and a very line illuminated address was presented tn the late Government valuator, Mr Jas. .1. Wilson, jun. llis Worship the Mayor (Mr Weaver) occupied the chair. During "the evening songs, recitations, and musical items were contributed by Messrs McCormick, Le Ruez, Bruce, Wallace, Keane, Clarke, j. d. Meiienzie, and McMurdy. W_en presenting the address, which is signed by various officials of the Valuation Department, including Mr McGowan, ! M.H.R., his Worship the Mayor addressed j the recipient in a brief but appropriate speech. A sumptuous supper was provided, and the following toasts were drunk:—"The King," "Our Guest," "Chairman," anU "Town Clerk."
