THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
I : MR. RAMSAY MasDONALD'S VIEWS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. With reference to the English municipal elections, Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald says the cables are evidently rather misleading as far as the Labour candidates are concerned. Three years ago there were forty Labour members in the London Borough Council. The party had lost thirtet-n seats in Woolwich;* that undoubtedly was owing to the attack Mr. Burns had been making in connection with the workhouse scandal. But, although thirteen seats were lost, the SocialisL and Labour members had increased from forty to forty-four; therefore they must haw gained seventeen seats in other boroughs. Mr. Mac Donald feel.s that the statement that the Labour part j- lost in the provinces is not correct. He is eontident that when the final figures are received it will be fouud tho Labour party has gained to some extent at any rate, though perhaps not largely "To put it more cautiously," he says, "I am certain thai the party has not lost ils position." Last .November the offi cial figures sent out by the Press Asso ciation showed that the Labour partj bad gained from forty to fifty seats. He went very carefully into tiie position, and found the gain had really been over eighty seats.
