BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

t ■ PARNELI. The. Parnell Borough Council met last evening. Present: Mr. G. W. Basley (Mayor), aud Crs. Wood, Briggs, Mitchell. Fowler, Bdgcumbe, and Foster. Tram-ears and L-igbtloss Vehicles.—A letter was received from the managing director of the Electric Tramway Company, asking, in view of the danger to cars, motormen, and vehicles concerned, through the prevalence of waggons and other vehicles travelling at night without showing a light visible from the rear, to introduce a by-law compelling all vehicles to carry a light at night visible from behind. In the winter ruonUis especially, said the writer, the danger on the various tram routes was very considerable, aud a number of accidents had occurred owing to this insufficient lighting of heavy vehicles. The matter was deferred pending the revision of the borough by-laws. Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill. —The secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote stating that he had, in accordance with instructions, communicated with the chairman of the Revision Committee concerning several clauses of the Municipal Corporations Ainemlrneiit Bill, including overdraft clause 2 ami clauses dealing with the power of borough councils in the matter of raising loaus. As a result of representations, he had good reason to believe that clause 2 would be amended to enable all councils to exercise the option of raising a loan to pay off an old overdraft. The ■ letter was referred to the Legal and Finance Commit tee, the town clerk to report. Fire Appliances.—The secretary of the Parnell Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote under Instructions from Capt. Cowan, applying for a light reel, at a cost of about £25, to enable the brigade to get to the scene of a fire without loss of time, the present heavy Teel being too much for two or three men to pull up hills. The letter stated that the addition of such a light reel would mean a valuable saving of time very frequently, as the first two men on hand could get away with it to the scene of an outbreak without loss of time". It was resolved to defer consideration of the matter to a future meeting. Water Consumption.—The turncock reported that the water consumption for the past fortnight had been 1.740,000 gallons, 1,365", 000 gallons through the Ponsonby meters, and 375,000 gullons through the Khyber Pass meter. Hospital Beard.—The Mayor was instructed to represent the Council at the meeting of representatives of the boroughs of l'arrwll. Newmarket, clrej Lynn, and Blrkenbead for the purpose of electing a member to represent those boroughs on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard. _i«Ut<?d Vehicles. —Mr 1». M. Hansen's letter re the motormen's petitions that heavily laden vehicles should be efficiently lighted was held over until the new by-laws come up for consideration. GREY LYNN. The fortnightly meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council was held last evening in the Council Chambers, the Mayor, Mr. J. Farrell, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. King. Murray. Sayers. Martin, Casey, Donald, Creamer. Diinery, Smith and Dumper. Sewer Outlet.—Attention to the lilthy state of the sewer outlet 111 Crummer-road was drawn by Mr. W. Casey. It was decided to instruct the foreman of works to effect temporary repairs to abate the nuisance, and to reply that the permanent work in connection with the sewer would be carried out when the £15.000 loan for drainage purposes was available. Police Protection.—ln replying to a communication from the Council relative to police protection in the borough, the Commissioner of Police wrote that arrangements were being made for Grey Lynn to have similar police protection to other suburbs of Auckland. A slight temporary reduction had been made in Ihe number of police at the various centres owing to the Christchurch Exhibition, but the strength will be maintained as far as possible by men from the probation class. The letter was received. Charitable Aid Board Klection. —The Mayor was appointed to attend a meeting of representatives of suburban councils ou 28th inst. for the election of a representative to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard. Fire Plugs. — Mr. Creamer pointed out that on the occasion of a recent incipient lire in Sacliville-street a serious outbreak might have occurred, the only lire plug of regulation size being at the top of the street, a considerable distance away. It was decided, ou the motion of Mr. Creamer, to lake early steps to alter the lire plugs to the city size, and lay mains in certain streets at present only provided with service pipes. ONEHUNGA. The fortnightly meeting or the Onehunga Borough Council was held In the Council Chambers last evening. There were present the .Mayor (Mr John Kowe), Crs. lilytu. Hutchinson, Moody. Morton, Usliorne. Williams. Karr, and Skinner. The overdraft was staled at £311) lti/:i, and the cemetery account in credit _'_i:i IS/10. Accounts amounting to £ISO 17/S were passed for payment. The Date Mr Kirkbride.—After the passing or accounts the Mayor (Mr John Kowe) moved, "That out of respect to the memory of the late Mr M. M. Kirkbride. _1.11.H-.
