WOMAN FINED £30,
barah Janp Brown, a lodjnnghousekeeper of Nelson-street, (doiVnde.d by Mr J. C. Martin) pleaded not guilty before Mr Dyer. S.M.. yrstarday afternoon, to three charges of unlicensed liquor telling on September 3rd and 4th. Constable Christensen said that, acting on instructions, be visited the house of Ihe accused in company with Constable Robinson. ;md there purchased some, ale, the accused leaving the houseto obtain it. On the following day they again visited the house and bought more ale.
Constable Robinson corroborated. i Sergeant Hansen said ho made a ! search nf the premises and found eleven i large full bottles of beer, and a few empty bottles. Several neighbours and lodgers were called for the, defesee and gave Mrs j Brown's house a good character. His Worship said if the accused had ' been a man he. would probably have sent j her to prison without the -ptiou of a fine. 1-icing. however, a woman, nnd :i mother of young children, nnd npparent- : ly not well-off, she. would lie more len- ! iintly dealt with.
