STARTLING OCCURP.EKCE AT "WHAKA. ,, (By Tclegrapli.—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA. this day. The .Maoris living :\t Whakarewarewa had a rather startling' experience last nijr'it. There had been evidences of abnormal geyser activity for some days past, but when the native residents retired for the night there wns no indication ot any alarming outbreak. At 11.30 p.m. the Maoris were aroused by a loud report, and rushing out of their houses, discovered that no less than three new gpysers were playini! near the bridge. Thin mud and stones were ejected, rising to a height of two hundred feet, and ash was thrown yards away, indicating that the eruption was of more than an ordinary character. The new geysers continued to play for twenty minutes, and then subsided. The Maoris are much concerned.
