CHINESE ON THE RAND.
LONDON, November 1. The Lnder-Secretary for the Colonies, replying in the House of Commons yesterday to Mr. E. H. Pickersgill(Liberal), said the decrease of whites employed at the Rand mines from April to September was 1000, and the increase of Chinese coolies in the same period was 398. A number of whites on the Rand were unemployed. There was abundant evidence, he added, that the people were becoming alive to the significance of these facts, and they would shortly be able to express their views on the subject in a representative Assembly. Replying to Mr. J. B. Markham, Mr. Churchill said he could not, without notice, give information regarding the increase of Kaffirs employed at the Rand mines, or whether any Chinese were doing the work of skilled whites.
