The first day's racing In connection witn the Auckland Kaeing Club's Spring Meeting takes place to-morrow (Saturday) on the club's course at iiUlerslie. Since last seasonextenslve alterations have been made to the enclosure, which has been considerably enlarged; while a new totallsator house has been erected, all the machines now being under one roof, which should greatly facilitate the handling of the investments and paying out of the dividends. As decided by the committee, investments on the machine will only be received from those present on the course, and under no consideration will money be accepted from those at a distance. Another new rule is to the effect that no passes will be given for the enclosure except in the case of members, who will be required to produce their members' tickets when applying for same. The club have received splendid acceptances for the various events, and, given fine weather, everything points to a highly successful days racing. The following are suggested as likely to run prominently in their respective engagements:— The opening event, the President's Handicap, one mile, has the following engaged: — Ben Jonson 8.7. Celtic 8.0, Lord Seatoii 8.2, Franklin 8.2, Waitati 8.1, Xvi Cakobau 7.11, Baltimore 7.11, Bromide 7.10, Aqua Kegia 7.!), Sir Hector 7.8, Geologist 7.«, Soultnsh 7-0, Metallist 7.0 ;and Baltimore or Celtic ■may supply the winner. The Held for the Great Northern Guineas, one mile, will probably consist of Cambrian, by Cyrenian— Mies Annie; Conductor, by Cyrenian-^Melodia; Loftus, by Seaton Delaval—Lissadurn; and Sv\*eet Alice, by Soult —Princess Alice. This event looks to be entirely at the mercy of Cambrian. The two-year-old event, the Welcome Stakes of five furlongs, has the following nominations: — Frontino, by Soult—Mies Uauphin; Cadence, by Cyrenian — Lute; Hierarch, by Cyrenian— Miss Annie: Wauchope, by Freedom—Black Watch; Necktie, by Menschikoff— Castorlace; Princess Ena, by Soult—Lady Harriett; Lady Ferris, by Phoebue Apollo—Kve; Blue Light, by Bluejacket— Kadiant; Mosque*, by hlotchklss — Aieger; Quadroon, by Menschikoff—The Slave; Carmania, by San Francisco—Campania. Hlerareh, Quadroon, and Finery read the beet, and they may finish In that order. In the Manukau Hurdle Kace of two miles Cuiragno ll.io. The Shorts Handicap of fire furlongs has the following left in:—Te Aroha 9.0, Strathavon 8.9, Discoverer 8.«, Black and Gold 5.5, Certainty 8.5, Pylades 5.5. The .Middy «.4, omatl s.l, Ben Blair 7.13, Foremost 7.10, Hautapu 7.U. .Merry Soult 7.2, Morahl 7.0, Dean Park 7.0, Gyrene 7.0; and Certainty and Umati read best. Tie big handicap event of the day, the City Handicap, one and a quarter mile, will probably see the majority of the lollowing go to the post:—Landlock 8.11, Leonator 8.8, Kustlque 8.0. lronmonld 7.9, Apologue 7.8, walpuna 7.8, Gienuuin 7.0, Deiania 7.2, Master Delaval 7.1, Geordie 7.0, Zuleika 6.12; and without going into details the judge's placings may tie Glenullin, Apologue, Deianla. A lot of moderates are engaged in the Hobson Handicap—Pearl Necklet a.O, Aristocrat 8.9, Lady r<eil 8.4, Lochbuhle 8.4, Waipa 5.3, Puhlpuhi 8.3, Uhlander 7.10, Colleen Unas 7.10, Uranium 7.10, Soultstone 7.10, Peregrine 7.10. Pearl Necklet and Peregrine read a likely pair. In the concluding event, the Flying Handicap of six furlongs, Landloct 9.0. Te Arolia 8.7, Carl Kosa 8-3, Strathavon 8.1, Soultmald 7.12, certainty 7.12, The Middy 7.11, Lurosome 7.t>, Pink-un 7.0, Jjonomlaiia 7.4, riilderkin 7.4, Claremont 8.13, appear, and Soultmaid or Pink-un may get the verdict. The Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting opens at Riccarton to-morrow (Saturday) when the big two-mile event of the year, the New Zealand Cup. comes up for decision. Another event in which a lot of interest is also evinced is the Welcome Stakes, in which the Hou. J. D. Ormoud's flying filly Eona meets Mr Stead's crack colt Boniform, and considerable speculation is likely to take place over the result. The doings of the various candidates left in the Cup have been fully enlarged upon during the past few months, and need no repetition. The placings of the judge may be—Paritutu 1 Multifid 2 Letherin 3 V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. The Ing Victorian Spring Racing Carnival commences to-morrow at Flcmlngton, when the V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Stakes come up for decision. The Melbourne Stakes usunlly throws some light on the Melbourne Cup, and the result will be looked, forward to with interest. The V.R.C. Derby looks to be a foregone conclusion for Poseidon. GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS. Instils wiis scratched this morning for the Gr?at Northern Guineas. NEW ZEALAND CUP PROSPECTS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. There Is vory littte that is fresh to add regarding the prospects for to-morrow's racing. The town Is rapidly filling with visitors, attracted partly by the Exhibition and partly by the Canterbury Jockey Chili's spring meeting, and the meeting promises to be most successful, as well'as enjoyable. Wednesday's rain has been an immense •beui'lH tii .ml course and enclosures, whic.i are now looking their very best. Th e riders in the New Zealand Cup will be as follow: — Paritutu C. Jenkins) S r> Lyrist (D. Price) 7 V.i Letherin (W. Young) T la Multliid (J. McCombo) 7 12 Glioorka (.W. Price) 7 0 Armistice yA. Olivet-) 7 r> Martello (G. Price) 7 4 iroumould (J. ■ Pnramore)..,. 7 a MakarotC (J. McCluskey) 7 2 St. Joe (S. Reid) 7 1 Landwern (L. Wilson) 0 10 Stepdancer (F. Jones) 6 9 . Lapland (F. Parr) G 0 Notus (Douglais) ti 7 Star Ruse (11. Price) G 7 Blyth'emaid (J. Olsen).. . g 7 ' Paritutu made many friends by a gallop ■which he did on Thursday morning, while Letherlu is now scarcely in so much' favour as hu was at the beginning of the week. Lyrist is a bad track horse, but his poor display with Paritutu on Thursday mornin°has nevertheless disconcerted hfs backers' Multifid grows steadily in favour, and although he may not be sufficiently seasoned to win outright, he is .bound to run a Teat race. Ghoorka is not ready, but Armistice is very well, and her poor track form is ignored by those who know lier aest. Another horse whose prospects have improved during the past few days is Martello. The brother to Royal Artillery is bi" enou-'h and good looking enough for anything and while it is known that he is fast he showed in a gallop with St. Joe on Thursday morning that he can stay 14 mile. Whether lie can get any further remains to be seen Iγ he can stay the full distance he ou<*ht to be very dangerous. I have no fancy for Iron moud, though I admit that he may run bet ter than his track form indicates and St Joe should be held safe by Martelio Maka' roff is strongly fancied, but he is too un trustworthy to be one of my selection- ane Landwern will have to perform a creat .Iμ. better than he did on Thursday morning w have a chance. Of the others, Lapland Star Rose, and Blythemaid may be dismis sed without remark; but Stepdancer will probably run a good mare, if \otus w the stayer he is reputed to be, he win on on Thursday's form, take a great deal of beating.
