VILLAGE FAIR AT DEVONPORT.

» ARPvANGED BY THE ANGLICANS. AN ATTRAGTI\ 7 E SCENE. The 'Anglicans , ' of • Deyonport gathered in strong force on the football ground in Stanley-street tiiis afternoon. The occasion was th* opening of a four-days , village fair, which has been \ arranged on a rather big scale, with the object of raising-a fund to redeem the bonds on Holy Trinity Church. The bonds are of rather long standing, having been issued tpij %he extension feSslhe. church' and the erection of 'the ! vicarage' many years ago. The fair, which was opened at 2.30 rthis afternoon by the vicar of Devonport, Rev. T. Eversbed, consists of about 20 large tents devoted to the sale of goods, amusements, theatricals, and the many side shows which are invariably found at affairs of this kind. The grounds •will be open every day from two o'clock till 10 p.m. until Saturday night. The prime originators of the scheme, to hold a fair were the members of the Trinity Ladies' Guild, in whosfe hands mainly the stalls are being conducted. The carrying out of the scheme was entrusted to an executive committee of six gentlemen, with the secretary and treasurer of the guild, Mrs. F. H. Templer and Mrs. G. Hunt, and their work has evidently been well done. The ground is well suited for the purpose. The public water supply was already laid on. and gas has been specially laid down to provide light fjr the evening hours. Each •tent will be lighted with incandescent light, and a number of powerful Lucas lamps will illumine the open air. The sale tents are prettily decorated, and well stocked with goods; refreshments "are provided ia abundance, and of humour there is no lack. One of the smallest but mo.st interesting tents is that containing the art gallery of Mr. te. L. Henderson and some of his friends. -Lhe walls here tire covered with humorous sketches and local caricatures.
