BOARD OF EDUCATION.

■ The ordinary meeting of the Education Board was held in the Board-room to-day, Mr Luke being in the chair. Those also present were Messrs. Bagnall, Edgecumbe, Hobbs, - Greenslade. Ktallwerthy, MeKenzie, Parr, and Harris.

Selection Committee—The Teachers' Selection Committee recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board: —Mr R. G. Hutton to be teacher of Te Arai halftime schools; Miss M. A. Hobertshaw to be teacher of Maungatawhiri school. That applications for the position of mistress of the Te Kcpuru school (■salary £110) be invited by advertisement. That school committees be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows:—Whangaripo, sole charge, Mr F. B. Dowding; Kariaotahi, sole charge, Misses M. Maxwell and A. Keaney, Messrs. 11. Fen wick and C. Roberts; Kaiwaka, solo charge, Miss E. H. Ryan; Parnell, assistant, at £95, Misses R. B. s Jones, M. C. Kelly, G. R. Jonos, and E. Cullcns. That tlie following appointments be postponed for a month: Waimii sole charge; Hora Hora, mistress; Nelson-street, assistant- Your Committee submit a request from the Kauaeranga School Committee for the appointment of an additional pupil teacher, and recommend that they be informed that such appointment can only be made in accordance with the regulations under the colonial scale. —The report was adopted.

The Finance Committee recommended payment of the following accounts, which have been duly examined and initialled: —Administration account, £89 IS/3; trannal and" technical account,

£87 0/9; building fund account, £1404 0/2. Your Committee report that the Board's account at the Bank is temporarily overdrawn to an extent of £2345 9/11, but that tliis overdraft "will be covered by sundry remittances and refunds, amounting in all to £G647 G/G. soon to be received from the Colonial Treasury at Wellington. Your Committee, recommend that as the Minister has disallowed the payment of house allowance to the teacher of the Kawhia school for 1904, he be called upon to rcfun'd the amount of allowance paid to him for the period during which ha was in occupation of the residence. That a remonstrance be forwarded against the Minister's decision to disallow house allowance to the teacher of the Ohango school. That the improvements to the playground of the Whangarei school be carried out as recommended by the arhiteet, the School Committee to contribute £10 towards cost. That the .contractor for the additions and improvements to the Hamilton West school building be notified that in view of the expense and inconvenience caused through the delay in completing the work the Board will be compelled to enforce the time penalty on his contract.— The report was adopted. Newton East Playground.—The Chairman said that with reference to the Newton East playground he had been horrified to see the small space that was available for drill, etc. An adjoining allotment had been bought for £400, and they had been promised the first offer for a second section that would materially help in enlarging the playground. Manual Training School. —Mr George stated that the sum of £652 had been grunted to establish a manual training school at the Thames. He had written, suggesting that endeavours be made to raise another £100 at the Thames, and thus give a thoroughly up-to-date institution. He had received a reply stating that an active canvass had been started with a view to supplementing the grant. Whangarei School. —With regard to a manual training school for Wanganui, Mr George reported that they had nothing so far. In his opinion it should have been clone before that at the Thames considering all that had been done locally. Onehunga High School.—lt was announced that the roll number of the school was 116, s composed of three clas3O3. The third class of the school has to be taught in a corridor. It was recommended by the inspector that one of the basement rooms be fitted up as a class room, and thus allow of additional accommodation for the children. It was resolved to adopt the inspector's report, and that the architect be asked to furnish an estimate of costs*
