ALLEGED SLY GROG SELLING.

CHARGES OF PERJURY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day.

Charges of sly grog-selling were again before the Police Court to-day. A constable named Ross and a probationer named Hall have been in the city for some months doing odd jobs for various firms, and in their spare time keeping a look out for sly grogx-selling. In the case of L. Clancy, keeper of the Trocadero, formerly Court's Otago Hotel, an offence is alleged to have been committed on November 8 last, but as it was not until the witnesses for the Crown had given evidence that the defence knew who were in the house at the time, adjournments were granted to enable witnesses to be hunted up. The defence to-day notified that attempts to find these persons had proved futile, and the magistrate reserved his decision. Clancy was then charged with selling liquor on December 2. Ross and J. Hall were witnesses, but neither of them could remember anything beyond what they had in their books as to. what took place at the Trocadero. In this, case also the charge against Mrs Clancy was adjourned.

A charge of alleged perjury against Ross, arising out of evidence he gave in another case quite apart from licensing cases, was also adjourned.

Samuel Kraetzev, a private detective, was charged with perjury in giving evidence in a case of trespass on Wingatui Racecourse. Kraetzer, in giving evidence, had alleged that Luby, who was then being prosecuted, had been in Christchureh in November, and had acted as a bookmaker's clerk. He was not sure on the point, but when closely cross-examined said it was at the November meeting after hearing evidence that Luby*had not been out of Dunedin in November. His Worship said he was not satisfied there was a prima facie evidence that Kraetzer swore falsely and knew he was so doing with intent to deceive the Court. The case would be dismissed.
