Pr, Ham, the local Health Officer, gave evidence before the Navigation Commission. He stated that the sanitation of veesels was much neglected, and that everything was sacrificed to cargo. In many instances the provisions of the seaaen were inadequate, and the death-rate compared unfavourably with that of otter dangerous occupations. SUGAR-GROWERS' CONFERENCE. (Received 9.33 a.m.) BRISBANE, this day. The conference of sugar-growers at iownsville affirmed the desirability of continuing the bonus on white-grown sugar alter 1906. The Federal Government was asked to make a definite pro- • """"wment on the matter, and it was «w decided to ask the Government immediately to stop leasing land to Asiatics, jo advance money to white growers, and to establish a State refinery.
