Victorian Beats BnSay. 1 MELBOURNE, February 10. A. E. Shrubb, the famous English distance runner, and A. P. Diifi'ev, the [noted American sprinter and world's ! record-holder for 100 yds (9 3-55.), made | their first appearance in Australia yesterday, competing at the meeting promoted by the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association, and held on the Melbourne cricket ground. The 100 yds championship of Victoria was won by Mueller . (Victoria), who defeated Duff'ey by Bin , in 10 3-ss. In the one mile and a" half invitation scratch, Shrubb was successful in beating Blake by 40yds in 7m. 3 l-10s. Shrubb covered the mile in 4m. 29 4-ss. The two-ini'e handicap was won by Riddell, with 230 yds * start, in 9m. 23 2-55., Shrubb retiring at a mile and a • half. The start in the 100 yds race was perfect, though Duffey was not so quickly off the mark, as had been erpected. At 50ydg lie must have been a yard in front. Here Mueller was seen to be gaining, aad - Duffey dying away at the tape. Mueller I forced himself to the finish. As Duffey's i record stands at 9 3-os., it is obvious that he has not yet struck form. His meeting with Mueller next Saturday should prove of particular interest. Shrubb has picked up form in remarkable fashion. He covered a half-mile on Saturday in 2m. ss. " |
