HUNTLY NEWS.
At the Magistrate's Court, at Huntly, on Tuesday, before M? Northcioit, John. Hughes, was chared with breaking and. entering Mrs Gardiner's house, with intent to commit a felony. Constable Caumody conducted the prosecution, and Air O. J- Parr appeared for the. accused. Mrs Gardiner stated that the accused had broken open the door and entered the house. 'Several witneessea were examined, and the accused called evidence on his own behaft. He !t ate ? J£. at knowll, g Mrs Gardiner was in the habit of going out cleaning, he went to ask her to scrub out hla house On knocking at her hack ■ door Mrs Gardiner called out, asking who was there, and he replied John Hughes. Shortly after Mrs Gardiner opened the doo; and asked what he wanted, when I said, "J want to ask you a favour." whereupon S4rs Gardiner struck him twice ou the head with an Iron instrument. The last blow atunried him. and when he came to he managed to crawl t">_me- The next thlny he was arrested. tus vvprahip, in summing up the evidence remarked that every "one. of the witnesses gp.ve the accused a splendid charactei'.Some or the evidence was Inconsistent, therefore the accused would lie dischargeu , . The Court was crowded with spectators durTus the heirlng. and the verdict was received with applause, which waa instantly supSressed..
