PROTECTION OF CHILDREN.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

CKRISTCHURCH,,this day.

The "Lyttelton Times" comments editorially on the case of an Auckland newspaper runner whose father was prosecuted recently. It saj'S: "For the benefit of the little mites one sees abroad in the city streets at night we could wish that the matter had ended with the sentence imposed upon the father. The neglectful parenb clearly deserved punishment, but Mr Wardell relented and amended his decision. The pity is that the police did not proceed in the first place under the statute instead of the by-law. The unfortunate little mite had no responsibility, and there was no excuse for charging him as though he had committed a crime. The father escaped altogether too easily, but we hope that the case will have the effect of calling attention to a grave evil which exists in all the larger cities, and to the very useful statute designed to suppress it.
