TE AWAITE TRAGEDY.
ELLIS SENTENCED TO DEATH. WELLINGTON, February 11. The trial of Ellis, alias McKenzie, concluded this evening, when prisoner was found guilty of the murder of Leonard Collinson, at Te Awaite, on February 20, 1004, and sentenced to death. The jury found a verdict of "Guilty, with a recommendation to mercy." His Honor said the recommendation to mercy would be forwarded to the proper authorities, but he could not encourage the prisoner to rely on any result therefrom. The prisoner maintained his unwavering calm during the recital of the- sentence, at the conclusion of which he was removed to the cells. ColHnson and a man named Ross weTe engaged bush-fellinor on Mr Riddiford's station at Te Awaite. Ross heard the report of a riiie. and, looking up, saw Collinson rolling down a hill-side. . Collinson was dead when picked up, having Yen shot through the heart.
