WELLINGTON, this day. •It is understood that the jury's recommendation of mercy in the ease of Ellis, alias McKenzie, convicted for the Te Awaite murder, has been received by the Minister for Jastiee from Mr Justice Demriston, and that an early meeting of the executive, presided over by the Governor, will be held to consider the recommendation "and decide whether the full penalty of the law shall be enforced or not. There is a general feeling that the sentence will be commuted owing to the rider attached to the jury's verdict. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHUECH, this day. Ellis, the Te Awaite murderer, was once a prisoner in Lyttelton gaol. Local government authorities say that it -was Ellis who assisted at the escape of the celebrated prisoner Jonathan Roberts.
