WELLINGTON NOTES.
tPy Telesraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. NATIVE LAND SURVEYS. Among other matters dealt with at a meeting of the CouncH of the New Zealand Institute this week was a letter from Mr Mitchell, of Rotorua, on native land surveys. It \?as decided to inform Mm that the Council had already represented this matter to the Government, and that as a result several surveyors had already had their survey liens on native lands taken up by the Government. AUCKLAND APPOINTMENTS. Mr H. P. Fisher, of the Thames, has been aDpointed a cadet in the Customs offic-fc, Auckland. Miss M. Dennehy. i whd some years ago held the position of assisGant matron in the Auckland Gaol, and was subsequently transferred [in a corresponding position to New Plymouth, his beea appointed matron of the DunetiLn Gaol. AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRANTS. Work, is none too plentiful in the Commonwealth States judging by the number of steerage passengers, mostly young fellows. who arrived here by the Wimmera yesterday afternoon. Asked the reason for changing their place of residence, some stated that "tilings ■were pretty bad at the present time on the other side." Why, they "didn't know, unless it was the indiHerent Government. The country was good enough., but it didn't appear to be run on satisfactory lines.' . Most >ctf the young fellows appeared to be of a robust stamp, such as would make handy men in the country.
