! o THE XELSON-STKEET CASES. The charges of obscene language from Nelrsuu-street were disposed of by Mr Wardeli, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. The evidence waa (reported yesterday. Thomas Chappell and his daughter Ethel were the defendants, and the girl, who had at first elected to be tried by a jury, asked tbe : magistrate to deal summarily with her. Evidence had been taken in her case yesterday afternoon, several witnesses i( j po~ing "that the girl used filthy lan- ! guage daring a disturbance in. which ; her father shouted out terribly obscene 'ixprePsioiK. Mrs Lhappell and Mrs Thomas, her , married daughter, gave evidence on be- ! iialt of iithel Ghappell, stating that she j ! vVLi> provoked by Chappell senior's vioI ience. and did not use any obscene ex- : press.ions. There were no previous convictions lagftinst the girl, and the magistrate de- : I'ideri to convict and order her to come I .ip for sentence if called upon. j With regard to the father, Mr War- ' dell convicted him, stating that his conduct was as bad as could be. He sentenced the accused to three months' hard labour.
