E.OMATA REEFS RETURN. £2407 FROM 1260 TONS. The return from the Komata Reefs mine for the month ending January 20 was £2407 from 1260 tons of ore treated. This shows slight improvement upon the yield for December. The total output from this mine to date is £142.540, as will be seen by the returns appended :— To December, 1909 £30.S<n 0 0 111 1901, SBTU tons 11.092 0 0 hi 1002, 12,2t>" tons 27,0"." 0 0 In l!>03, 14.7.«i> tons SI.ISI U 0 in 1904, 16.300 tons 84,430 0 0 £140.133 0 0 Jan. 23. 12C0 tons 2,407 0 0 Total to date £142,540 0 0 WAIOTAHI. Shares in the Waiotahi G.M. Company sold down to 17/ yesterday afternoon, but this morning again changed hands at 18/, and at 17/9 and IS/ at the noon call, with further sellers at the latter price. Reports from the Thames are to the effect that the mineral band of quartz is continuing downwards in the winze, and appears of the same nature as in the level. When timbering is completed in the level stoping will be commenced on the block above the level MAY QUEEN EXTENDED. The manager telegraphed thw afternoon: "Retorting this afternoon's amalgam, 4780z., cold •wa'er."' WAIHI CONSOLS. WAIHI. this day. The Diamond Drill Co., who for the past two months have been engaged under contract to the Waihl Consols Co. in boring at the mine, have completed a <let>th of 1225 feet, but failed to intersect any reef. I understand it is the intention of the company to put ilown more lioreholes. THE FUTURE OP WAIHI. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. Mr L. O. Beale, mining engineer, Danedin, has been in Waihi for s. fortnight engaged on a special mining mission. Beale lastde several excursions through the Waihi and Grand Juntion mines, and has also visited the Extended and Waihi Consolidated properties. The visitor was greatly impressed with the future of Waihi. He is f.i opinion that the reef system in this district will be found t<! live at a great depth, carrying good payable ore, and that the reefs present unusual facilities for mining on a large scale. Mr Beale will probably complete bis present investigations within the nest few days. WAIHI G.M. CO. (By Telegraph.—Owu Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. The Waihi Gold-mining Co. have adopted the metric system (or what is commonly railed the "short tun") iv calculating the quantity of ore crushed. The present return is the first for the year, and Is A>ased on the metric system. The difference in the tonnage, comparing the long and short ton in the quantity of ore crushed during the period just ended, is over 2000 tons. The company for the period ending 2&uh January, as a result of 21 2-3 days, or 2 l-'.l days less than the full period, crushed and treated L'i3,403 tons for a yield of baliion of the value of £43.47 C 16/2. The tonnage is based on the metric system—that is, 20UOlb to the ton instead of 22-iOlbs :;s formerly. By a simple calculation it will b« seen that basing the tonnage on thf> system hitherto u.spd by the company. 21,043 tons crushed and treated during past period would be reduced to 19.100 tons. I understand that the company have adopted the metric system of calculating tonnage in order to come into line with the system that is generally practised by mining companies in other parts of the world. Ii therefore provides a better means of comparison. In all departments of mining thy short ton is used by mining companies in Soath Africa, the United States, and Australia. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Minerals, f.td.—Tup manager reports that be has opened out a face 20 feet wide, giving good payable prospects, and the good wash dirt is carrying even further south than this, the df-pth of the wash being two feet. The wash in the hopper at time of writing was 54 loads, since which 30 loads were washed for £55. Owing to want of water he has been unable to wash np since, bin operations have been resumed. The manager wires that he has had another wash up of 48 loads, yielding gold sold for £74 1/. Waihi Beach United. —The shaft is now flown 132 ft. and is timbered to within 10ft of the bottom. Golden Spark.—No. 2 stope is now in or up to the old workings. A thud srope has been started. A little gold was seen In the ore broken down last wetk. whifh is being saved for treatment.
