THE NIGHTSOIL SERVICE.
■ —i The traffic manager of the Auckland Harbour BoaJd reported to the Board yesterday afternoon that a nuisance had been created in connection with the loading of the s.s. Vivid, which conveyed the nightsoil pans from Hobsonstreet Wharf to Harkness' Point. The chairman reported that the difficulty had arisen at the time of the strike, and that the matter had baen rectified. Mr Philson thought that if boats like the Rangatira and passenger boats were to be berthed at the Hobson-street Wharf it was advisable to notify the contractors that they, must find another place to load their vessel, and suggested that notice be given that the Hobsonstreet Wharf was no longer available. The Hon. E. Mitchelson stated that up till the present the contractors had to get along with the old pans. On Monday last, however, the last of the new pans ordered were supplied, so that no further nuisance would exist. Mr Calder said that the City Council were faced with a difficulty in the matter, and the Board should help, not hinder, them. Mr Philson disclaimed any idea of harassing the Council or the contractors, but said that it was the duty of the Board to keep the wharves clean. If passengers were to use the same wharves as the nightsoil steamer, then the Board would be blamed, and blamed rightly. It was decided to take no further action in tha matter.
