BOARD OF EDUCATION.
» The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Board of Education was held today at the Board's office. Tne chairman, Mr S. Luke, presided, and there were also present: Messrs H. J. Greensin de, L. J. Bagnali. J. D. McKenzie, R. Hobbs, G. Edgeumbe, and J. Stallworthy. Finance Committee.-—The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling £11,087 6/9. The committee have requested the Chief Inspector to report upon the question of limiting the attendance of pupils at the district high school, Onehunga. The committee recommend that action should be taken to rent the Epsom Hall for temporary use for infant classes until the completion of the infant school now in ccuuse of erection. That steps should be taken to give effect to the inspector's recommendation for the removal of the Opitonui school. building to a site at Wbangapoua, with a view to the amalgamation of the two schools under one teacher. The report was adooted. in schoois, and calling- on the electors Teachers' Selcifckm Committee.—This committee recommended (1) That the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:—Mr Rupert Harrison, teacher of Rawhia and Umawera schools; Mr William P. Johns, teacher of Red Hill school; Mrs A. G. Bird, teacher of Awanni school; Mr W. H. Smith, teacher of Cabbage Bay school; Mr R. S. Webster, teacher to -ickau school; Mrs H F. Hunt, teacher of Piako Valley school; Miss E. J. Whitinore, teacher of Kaiikati No. I school; Mr E. F. Snell, teacher of Otara school; Miss K. A. Ash by, teacher of Matapouii school; Miss F, J. Garrett, mistress of Kohukohu school: Miss E. M. Hardwieke, mistress, of Kuaotunu school; Miss S. W. Morley, mistress of Te Puna school: Miss Ethel E. Bond, mistress of Waihopo school; Miss A. M. B. Maenainara, assistant to Waihi district high school; Miss N. Warren, assistant to Waiokaraka school; Miss M. E. Davidson, assistant to Beres-ford-street school; Mr F. D. Woods, to be acting assistant Opotiki district high school until 30th June next. (2) That school committees be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows:—Maungatawhiri Valley, Miss D. Dean. Miss E. M. Vincent, and Miss M. A. Robertshaw; Te Arai, Mr W. F. Collis; Whakatane (mistress), Miss L. Worrall; Hora Horn (mistress), Misses A. M. Nixon. M. E. Roberts, E. Cullens, and F. M Wells. (3) That applications for the position of lady assistant at Parnell school, salary £95, be invited by advertisement from teachers classified E2 or higher. (4) That fhe request of the Whangarei School Committee for the employment of two pupil teachers instead of an assistant at the Whangarei school be granted when the position shall become vacant. The report was adopted. Chairman's Report,—The report of the chairman stated that the tender of Mr J. C, Spinley (£165) had been accepted for roofing at Newton East school. Resignations had been received from Miss M. Tilly, mistress Whakatane school; Miss J. V. Evans, assistant Pa-rnell school; and Miss M. McGee, teacher Kariaotahi school. •Statistics. —The school statistics for the quarter ended December 31, |304, showed that the number of schools, including 72 half-time, schools, was 427, an increase of three. The number of certificated teachers was 680, of which 329 were males and 351 females, and of pupil teachers 154, 39 being males ■and 115 females. Tbe roll number was —boys, 15,967, an increase of 112; girls, 14,240, an increase of 113: a total of 30.207, and a total increase of 225. The average attendance was —boys, 13,945, an increase of 327; girls, 12,162, an increase of 444: a total of 26,107, and a total increase of 771. The average attendance for 1904 was 25,721.
