Mr W. J. Napier went to Wellington yesterday by the Rotoiti. The Rev. G. B. Monro arrived from the South by the Mokoia yesterday. The Hon. John Meagher, M.L.C., left for Sydney last night in the Manuka. The Rev. W. E. Lush and Mr* Lush have been spending a vacation at Waikaremoana. Rev. Father Birch, of the Franciscan Order of priests, is travelling to Sydney in the Mokoia. Rev, J. ('. Andrew, who attended the University Senate, left for the South in the Rotoiti yesterday. Mr William Vaile, brother of Mr S. Vaile, of Auckland, died at the age of 73 at Mangapai not long ago. Rev. Bro. Stanislaus, Provincial of the Marlst Bros, in Australasia, left for Sydney lust night in the Manuka. Mrs Ballanee. who is now in Wellington, spending a few days with her relatives, is returning to London' by the Papanui on the lath. Mr a:nl Mrs A. ,1. Mr Gillon ha* rejoined the s.s. Manuka as purser, Mr George, who has been acting purser, rejoining the Rotoiti. Mr Paasmore, who was relieving Mr George, returns to the .Vlartiroa as assistant purser. Mr Wardell, S.M. who has been appointed on the Representation Commission which sits in Wellington on 15th February to detine the boundaries of the city electorates in the Xortli Island, leaves Auckland for Wellington on Sunday. Mr S. dimming, supervising officer at the Auckland Telegraph Office, has been promoted to the position of chief clerk at the Gisborne post and telegTaph office. The local stall" has presented him with a line liqueur stand as a testimony of their regard. Amongst the passengers to the South to-day by the-Manuka were Mr and Mrs 11. .1. As Sir Joseph Ward is to be present at the consecration of the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Christchurch (says our Wellington correspondent), he can- j not possibly ho in Auckland this week. ] The date of his arrival in the Northern city is uncertain. Mr A. Tapper, late licensee of the Anchor Hotel, and Mrs Tapper and the two Misses Tapper were passengers by the Manuka for Sydney last night. From Sydney they proceed to England in one of tire mail steamers, and after spending a holiday in the Old Country will return to Auckland. Mr F. H. Pickering, of Auckland, president of the New Zealand Underwriters' Association, and general manager of the Sun Fire Office, returned to Auckland by the Mokoia yesterday. He went to Wellington to attend an important meeting of the Underwriters' Association. Mr Hutchison, chief officer of the Mokoia, has been promoted to the command of the Poherua. He left the Mokoia at Wellington, the officers, engineers, stewards and sailors all making ■Trim farewell presentations. Mr Nicolaon, of the Rotokino, has succeeded him on the Mokoia. The Chancellor of the New Zealand University (Sir Robert Stout, C.J.), who has been in the Auckland district for a considerable time past, goes to Wellington to-day in the Manuka. Lady Stout disembarks at Napier, to stay there for c. few days. Mrs Sproule, wife of Mr V. Sproule, passenger agent for the Oceanic Steamship Company, intends leaving for London by the lonic, which sails from iWelfingtbn early in March. Mr Sproule hfmnelf is paying a visit to the South iwith Mr J. L. Young at the present. Mr G. Hogben (Inspector-General of Schoobi), who has been attending the TJnwersity Senate meeting in Auckland, goes to Gisborne to-day in the Manuka. The Rev. Professor SaJmond, Professor Sale and Professor J. H. Scott are passengers fro Dunedin, and the Registrar '-(Mr J. W. Joynt) to Wellington by the same steamer. The Rev. Father Hills, who is attached to the teaching staff of St. Patrick's Wellington, is visiting Auckland. He leaves for Wellington on Friday by the West Coast boat. Frs» Rogers and Keenan, of New South Wales, who have been visiting Auckland, are going to Christchurch by way of the West Coast. Keenan has been staying witli relatives in Auckland. Tbe Rev. Mother Ignatius, of St. Marry's Convent, is visiting Te Aroha for a few days. On what appeared to be excellent authority we yesterday made tho statement that the Rev. Mother Ignatius had been succeeded as Superior by another nun of the order in tho ordinary course of election. It appears our informant was in error. We are informed that the Rev. Mother was appointed last year, and that her term of office continues three years.
