Fonsnmotion, : distribution and exchange of wealth."; the i law of papulation; emigration and Immi- ' gration; problems of industiial organisation; strikes; trade unions; monopolies and ; combinations; proposed remedies for low wages; over production: land tenure; : socialist theories.; State and municipal ' socialism; land nationalisation; land ratin™ and taxation. "That the definition of economies ! for hoinmrs in arts be as follows:— : Economics ithree papers); The subject of treated more fully than for the Dejrree of Bachelor of Arts, with special reference to the following: Methods nt economical investigation, and the use of statistics: history of economics; theories of social progress: history of economic chanses in relation to their causes." was postponed until the next session of the I Senate. __ _ DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY. The . Economics Committee also recomr'.ended, "That application be made to the t'arliampnt of New Zealand for power to confer the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. .-.nd th.it an extension of charter in this direction he applied for at the same time as application is made for its extension to f'ver the degree, power to confer which has recently been granted, and that when this power has been obtained economics should be one of the subjects for this decree.' , There was a little discussion upon this matter, but the Senate hy a majority agreed to endorse the recommend; 1 t.-on. Ir <vas stated that the degree, which had been rather in disrepute for some ye.-irs pass, had been lehaftilitatrd un oubllc u^t- eem recently, and su'-h universities as Kdinburgh had' of late years granted the (ie<rrees with increasing frequency. It was stated to be a degree that would be very r-efnl iv this university, and there were already a number who were quaiilied to sit for it.
