THE COMMERCE DEGREE.

THE COURSE OF STUDY. —— APPROVED BY UNIVERSITY SENATE. ' Since the Auckland University College Council has decided to espouse the cause of commerce by being the first College in the colony—if not in the colonies —to establish a University School of Commerce, the consideration by the University Senate of the course of study proposed is of especial interest to Aueklanders. The Auckland University College intends to proceed with the instruction forthwith, and it is also intended that not only shall degrees be issued, but diplomas for a modified standard of examination, entitling the holder to call himself an "Associate," or something similar, will also be issued. That, however, is a purely local function, and the University Senate only concerns itself with the degrees. THE COURSE. The course proposed will take three years, students matriculating for entrance, and passing iv algebra and geometry either at the time, or before the First Examination. The First Examination will comprise the following subjects: French or German, history, geography, economies, mathematics, or one of the following sciences—physics, chemistry, geology; accounting. It will be possible for the student to take any !two of the subjects one year after matriculation, but the First Examination cannot be taken before two years of study have been done. The Second Examination (Final) comprises the following subjects: Commercial law, statistical method, commercial French or German, accountancy, or one of the science subjects alternative to mathematics abpve. provided it be not already taken; and two of the following —Actuarial mathematics, industrial law. economic history, currency and banking. This examination cannot be taken in less time than a year after the First Examination.'
