) A NOTED AUSTRALIAN CKDiDJAIi. (By-Telegrapn.—Own Correspondent^ CHEESTCHURCH, this day. Philip White, the daylight robber, is an Australian by birth, and began his career by breaking into premises in Sydney and serving six months in gaol there. He also served short sentences in Oastlemaine and Dariinghurst Gaols, and then appeared in Wellington, where he broke into the railway station, and was sentenced to 18 months for that aad six months extra for Attempting to escape. It is understood that he has stated that "it is in him." He is illiterate, and it is thought has had no schooling at all. On the occasion of White's arrest for bnrglary in Sydney he was captured by Constable Maher, the policeman who, with Constable Ckiilfoyle, was shot by Digby and Grand, who were subsequently hanged ,for that crime. He finished his last term in Wellington Gaol on Jan-nary 24 last, and came to Christchureh immediately. White bought the revolver that he used on Tuesday in Dunedin.
