THE COMING CRICKET MATCH.

(To the Editor.) Sir » — Your correspondent, "Middle Stump," in his inane and attemptedly facetious letter on the above subject proves conclusively &at all the Auckland lunatics are not confined to the grounds oT the establishment at the Whau—l beg pardon, Avondale. His statement that he remembers "a member of one of the English teams making a pot of money on the Domain groundhe had a list of the Auckland men, and before the match commenced the number of runs eacli man was to be allowed to score was put opposite his name)" etc.—this statement is as untrue as it ois absurd. If "Middle Stump" knew anything at all about cricket, and had the interest of cricket at heart, he would never have made such a fool of himself as he has done by inditing that letter.. In the middle and early eighties we had in New Zealand "players who were considered up to Australian form, we had a bowler in Auckland in \v. Lankham who was promised an engagement if he would only go Home, and in 18S8 I had the pleasure of seeing in the Old Country one of the despised Aew Zealand players, W. H. Dudney representing his county (Sussex) against Yorkshire. Mr Ohlson's selection of the 15 differs in two respects from the 15 I should have picked; but I recognise that he has devoted a good deal of time to watching the practising and Is therefore better qualified to select than I am, and I don't think his team will disgrace Auckland cricket notwithstanding "Middle Stump's" ridiculous twaddle. Anyhow, sir. T wish ™?-^° y * all good luck - and ' unlike Middle Stump," I am not ashamed to sign my name.—l am, etc., .. _, P. H. WILSON. I Marine Square, Devoaport, 2/2/1806.
