Proposal to Establish a Voluntary
Lock Hospital.
At tho meeting of tho City Council las night tho following lotter was road :—
" Auckland, Juno 8, 1536. To Hia Worship tho Mayor of Auckland and City Councillors. Gentlemen, I have tho honour respectfully to submit tho following resolutions passed at a meeting of the Ministers' Association of Auckland, and humbly to ask the permission of tho Council to interview thorn in roforenco to tho same. Whoroas tho Act known na tho Contagious Diseases Act, as now in forco in thia city, is upon moral and religious grounds conscientiously objected to by a number of ratepayers and citizens of Auckland, and, believing tk'it tho City Council arc likely to take into consideration their present method of dealing with tho ;ociul evil, bo it resolved (1) 'Thut this meeting of the Ministers' Association in Auckland, in rocording its conscientious disapproval ot tho Contagious Di?eanos Act, respectfully oiiggest to the City Council : 1. Thodosirabilityof continuing tho present Lock Hospital m ;i voluntary Lock Hospital and Free Lying-in Hospital. 2. Tho establishing a Keformutory for the moro depraved young girlH und abandoned young women.' Hesolved (2) ' That a deputation from this meeting should t-eok an interview with tho City Council, and further explain the noccHJity for such institution, and to aek the Council to securo any power thut may be required for establishing tho hiitjo ; that the deputation shall consist of tho Revs. R. Bavin, A. Smith, and .]. S. Hill, and shall wait upon tho Council at tlioir next Bitting, Thursday, June 10th.'—I am, &c , J. S. Hill, Convenor of the Deputation. To his Worship tho Mayor, VV. K. Waddel, Esq." Tho Kovs. J. 5. Hill and A. J. Smith woro present, and having obtained the sanction of the Council, tho former, aftor apologising for tho abßenco of the Rev. Mr Bavin through indisposition, urged on the Council tho necessity of forming an institution for the reclamation of abundonod women. Such institutions had been found boneficial in Melbourne and England.—Tho Rev. Mr Smith spoke to tho savuo effect. — Aftor some remarks by the Council, the proposal was referred to tho Legal Committcy.
