MELBOURNE.
July 30. In the division which took place last night on ti-e tariff propositions, seventy-three members voted, and three only were absent besides the Speaker and the Chairman of Committees. Sick men were brought up to vote on both sides. At the close the Premier simply moved the adjournment; but it is generally believed that the Government will either resign or ask for a dissolution. The Press urges the latter course. The Canada, which put into the Mauritius is likely to be condemned and sold there, as the loss would be less than repairing her.
The Executive have decided upon the execution of Ah Cat, for the Bet Bet murder, on the 9th.—The case of Ah Oaa, for the Vaughan murder, is postponed, as he is believed to be an imbecile.
The case of Judge Dunne was not dealt with by the Cabinet to-day; he is unlikely to take his seat on the Bench again. Mr Stephen's life-boat starts to-morrow if the weather is favourable. The trip is regarded as a hazardous undertaking. The Model Lodging-house report is satisfactory. Between January and July 37,318 persons were accommodated.
John M. Boland, late Manager of the Pioneer Assurance Company, has been found guilty of falsifying the books, and was remanded for sentence.
