The schooner Mary Melville is loading at Lyttelton for Auckland. She was to sail on Saturday next. The cutter Magic, and the schooner Mary King, have cleared in ballast for Tairua. The cutter Mercury has cleared for Tairua with 5 casks beer, 2 kegs gfnger beer, 2 tons flour, and 4 casks meat. The schooner Acadia has arrived from Napier witli 4 tons of bones and ballast. The cutter Magic brings 21763 feet timber from
Tairu'a. Tha s s Rowena arrived last night from Tauranga with passengers and cargo. The b»rque Stag is discharging her cargo Of coals at the ASP Company's T. The brigantine Flirt arrived this morning from Lvttelton with a cargo of breadstuffs. Captain McKenzie reports leaving on the 23rd.ultimo. Had head and variable winds during the passage. Owicg to the extensive natureof the injuries received by the brig Syren in her late pounding match on Tairua bar, it has been found necessary to bring her rouDd to Auckland for repairs. She is expected in a few days. M-ssis Ford and Hulme's new schooner, the Elsinore sailed for Russell this morning. *he had about ten tons of ballast on board, and with that stood up stiffly to the breeze. She is very taking to the eye under canvas, The schooner Mary King has had her repairs completed at the hands of Messrs Bigelow and Son. All the bulwarks and stanchions in her port side have had to be renewed, besides other important defects remedied. She was taking in sandstone ballast this morning, and was fo leave this afternoon for Tairua to load timber for Lyttelton. The clipper schooner Leslie has been chartered by Mr W. D. Brewer to load sheep and cattle for Levuka.
Sandstone billast is being now used for ballasting vessels going out of the harbour without cargo. Thin is an admirable substitute for shingle or scoria, and is cheapen Another recommendation is that there is plenty of Jt close at hand in the Fort Britomart cliffs. Wej und«»s'and that some contractors ihave already obtained permission to cart the stone away, and are doing good a business in supplying vessels at the wharves
