Leave of Absence

On the motion of Mr Sheehan, leave of absence was granted to Mr Bradshaw for a week. Major Atkinson stated that the second reading of the Abolition Bill, with, permission of the House, would be fixed for Friday at 7.30. Telegraph to Ohinemuri. In reply to Mr Buckland, whether it was intended to extend the telegraph to Hikutaia and Mackaytown, Mr Reynolds replied that on notice being given he had telegraphed to Mr Sheath, but had not yet received a reply, but expected one in a week, when he will answer the question. The Fatutaki Block. In reply to Mr. Kelly, Mr. Richardson said the Patutaki was not sold or offered. {Surveys were being pushed forward, when it will be offered for sale. University Reserves. In reply to Mr. Rolleston, respecting the University reserves, Mr. Bowen said with reference to the Taranaki reserve, there j were difficulties with the natves respecting the boundaries of the Waikato reserve, which was a valuable coalfield. He said he thoughit was better to defer action for utilising it till the railway is open. The j Raglan reserve and also coal, lime and iron will soon be utilised for the benefit of the I trust; also, the Bay of Plenty reserve. Steps Would be soon taken, and the returns from j all would be wholly devoted to higher educa B tion.

Friendly Societies. i In reply to Mr Rolleston, the Government , said that a report was being prepared by the i Registrar of the Friendly Societies in accor- j dance with the Act, and would be laid on the table.

The Mangere Bridge. \ Mr Sheehan moved that it be an instruction to the public accounts committee to j enquire into the circumstances of debiting, the cost of the Mangere bridge to the votr s for road's and works north of Auckland*.; He referred to the disbursement of I

the vote. Only ten thousand pounds had > been given to the Superintendent. Another ten thousand was promised but not paid, as it was said all had been expended. He referred to the statement of the Minister of Works last week to the effect that by consent of the Provincial Government the work was charged so. Mr Sheehan read telegrams from Mr Hurst, saying he never agreed to charge the Mangare bridge in this account, nor was ever informed of the intention. Mr Lusk telegraphs, '• I never agreed nor the proposal made." Mr Gillies telegraphs, "Neither I nor the Executive ever agreed, nor was the suggestion ever made verbally, nor in writing." Mr. Richardson, in reply, while offering no objection to the motion, emphatically asserted that Mr. Gillies said, "My Executive recommend the acceptance of tenders." Wi Katene ripped into the Provincial administration.

Mr Williams followed his colleague in the same strain. The motion was carried.
