The Gum Tax
Wellington, this day, 3.30 p.m. Mr Williams {presented a petition from 340 at tho Bay of Islands praying the House to interpose against the resolution of the Provincial Council imposing a gum tax. The Thames Foreshore
Mr O'JNeill gave notice to ask on Tuesday the Government to iniroluce a B;ll handing ihe foreshore to the Thames Municipality.
Teddy Wakefield. Mr Wakefield asked if the Government had inspired a certain paragraph in the Tribune, which it is generally known was written by himself. Sir Donald. McLeau declined to hold the Govemmei_t responsible for newspaper paragraphs. It is understood the Tribune pays at ihe rate of a bed for huoh contributions.
Government DepositsIn answer t_ Mr Pike's question relative to money paid in the Bank of New Zealand, the Government declined to answer till after the Fiuancial Statement.

The following Bills were read a first time : Mr Bowen's St. mp Unties Amendment, Mr Buuney's Extension of Queen's Wharf BJl.jjj Mr Mervyn is now moving for leave to introduce an amendment to the Goldfields' Act, ISGG.
The Lords
The Lords presented the address in reply to the Governor at three.
First Readings. The object of Mr Mervyu's bill is to fix the indemnity tobepsid for pastoral tenants' lands refcerved for gold mining purposes. Tho bill was rtad a first time ; also, the •Indemnity Bill, making good the deficit of last year.
Movements of the Opposition.
Mr. Bunny is whipping up the Opposition vigorously. There is something in the wind.
The G-reat Debate
The debate has been resumed on the address in reply.
Mr Murray is on his logs speaking of the dissatisfaction a_d non-success of the railways, revealing some gross cases of mismanagement to the Auckland line to his own personal'knowledge. He is reviewing loan negotiations.
