CHINA.—ATTACK ON A CHAPEL.
On May Ist, the M. E. Chapel at Kingkiang was attacked by a mob, who broke the§ windows, desks, chairs, pulpit and everything breakable about the premises. The preacher with his wife and child escaped. A few days afterwards several of the vagabonds, were arrested and received a severe thrashing. Several English and Russian ships of war are about starting on river voyages of ex*-; ploration to the interior. Troubles in Formosa continue between the..; Chinese and the aborigines now extending to the east and north of the island. JAPAN.—TERRIBLE FIXE. Forty houses were destroyed by fire in the village of Shimongamura, Gochinj on the 19th ult. On the 24th another fire destroyed twenty more houses; and on the 30th a - third fire broke out, and a violent wind im-_| polled the flames, which destroyed almost' the entire village. Many people were found " burnt in their beds. A free public library of 20,000 foreign volumes has just been established in YedttO i by the Educational Department.
