NORTH SHORE HIGHWAY DISTRICT.
The annual meeting of ratepayers in the North Shore district was held last night at the Ferry Hotel, Woodside, Mr Smart in the chair.—The balance-sheet shewed receipts : £104 lbs 2£d; expenditure £68 18s 7d. There remained on past years £44 10s 5d arrears of rates. Several questions were asked by Messrs Cook and Thomson relative to the mode of expending the funds. These were answered by Mr Hawkins. The accounts were adopted. A proposal to post a list of the defaulters fell through, upon a suggestion that they should first receive intimation of the intention, and so have an opportunity of saving their good names. On the motion of Mr Matthews, the rate for the ensuing year was fixed at one penny in the pound on the value to sell.— The valuation was fixed at £1. per acre.— Messrs Hawkins, Wilson, Phillips, Denby and Hildritch were elected trustees, and Messrs Matthews and Longham auditors. A vote of thanks to the late trustees was carried.—After considerable reluctance to accept the office, Messrs Matthews and Parker consented to act as fence-viewers.— A strong oppposition was offered to the planting of trees, but ultimately £15 waa voted for that purpose.
