Provincial Council Election, Newton.

The nomination and election of a represen" tative of Newton in the Provincial Council, in the place of .the late Thomas Macready, took place at noon to-day in the Newton Academy. Colonel Balneavis, the Returning Officer, presided, and read the advertisement convening the meeting, and writ. ; He then invited electors to name their candidates. Mr G". Holdship proposed Mr Geo. Johnson, of the firm of Whitson and Son, as a fit and proper person to represent Newton in the Provincial Council. Mr Johnston was an independent gentleman, who would, doubtless, do his duty in the Council with the same tact and good management as he had displayed in the conduct of bis own business. He been requested to come forward himself, but found that he could not spare the time : from his private business. Mr Johnston, ' unfortunately, was not able to be present; but he could assure them that that gentleman, if elected, would be well able to hold his own in debate, as well as in action. He considered that he possessed much greater claims to their suffrages than he .himself did. Mr W. H. Ripley Beconded Mr Johnston's nomination. Mr Cherry proposed Mr John McElwaine, whom they all knew, while Mr Johnson was a stranger to the district. Mr J. C. Wilkes seconded Mr McElwaine's nomination. He did not see the gentleman here though he had promised to come forward. On a show of hands being called for, the numbers were declared — Johnston ... ... ... 15 McElwaine 7 Mr Holdship, in explanation of Mr McElwaine's candidature, said it had been understood before hand that he should retire in favour of Mr Johnston. It was j under these circnmstances that a poll was not demanded. The Returning Officer then declared Mr Geo. Johnston, freeholder, to be duly elected to serve in tho Provincial Council for Newton. (Cheers). A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer concluded the proceedings.
