DR. CROKE.
APPOINTED Arehtashop of Cssliel, Ireland.
The Very Rev. Father Walter Macdonald has received information to-day that tho Right Rev. Dr. Croke, Bishop of Auckland, has befcn appointed Archbishop of Oasbel. 'I he fnfonnation does not come officially, but is based on the statement thai; a cablegram to that effect had been received in Sydney. There can be no doubt, however, of its accuracy. We take the following information relative to Cashel from Chambers' Eucycloreedia :- "Cashel is a town of Ireland, in. Tipperary county, and is 105 miles south-east of Dublin. I* is irregularly built, on the south and east slopes «f an isolated heighr, rising abruptly from a rich and extensive plain. Population 1841, 703GJ; 1851, 4795. Cashel is a bishop's see, and returns one member to Parliauifntr The ancient kings of Munstwr here. , The top of the height, or 'Jlock of Cashel," is occupied by an assemblage of the most interesting ruins in Ireland, uhich have a grand effect from the country around. The ruins consist of a cathedral, the largest and most remaiknble in the country, founded 1169, burned 1495, and afterward? repaired ; a stone-roofed chapel, built 1127 by Cormac McCarthy, king of Minister, and tho most perfect specimen of the kind in the country; Hore Abbey, founded 1200 ; the palace cjf the New MuDhter kings ; and a round t-jwer 90 feet high, and 56 feet in circumference. The round tower is built of freestone, and the other ruins of limestone. *U C., in 1172, the great synod was held in . which the Irish prelates tirst acknowledged the authority of the English king and church."
