The Tairua Crushing.

Forty Ounces to the Ton

GEAHAMSTOWN.

(From our Own Correspondent.) This day.

The result of the trial crushing of stuff from the Tairua claim waa magnificent. The return was rather over 40 ounces to the ton. S jme sanguine people expected more, but the return is nevertheless a brilliant one. The stuff was treated at the single stamper battery of the Moanatairi mill, the crushing being superintended by Mr Beeche. Several of the directors also visited the mill during the day. The keenest interest was evidenced in the- crushing during the day in town, and eager inquiries wer« made as to the probable result. While the crushing was progressing, it was simply impossible to judge •what the probable reßult would be— even allowing a large margin. It was evident that the larger proportion of gold was retained in the stamper-box, for the show of the plates (as may be judged from the fact that only ISozs amalgam was derived from that source) was no indication of the worth of the stuff. When the crushing was finished, and the stamper-box opened, the amalgam was found there in large quantities, and 3,0000zs of rough amalgam was taken from the box alone, after treating the main parcel of 2 tons 5 cwt from the shaft. Then the trial lots of 1 cwt each, one of which was from No. 2 reef and the other from No. 3, were treated, and these being small,' were finished up while the amalgam from the main reef was going through, tbe berdans. The parcelfroitt No. 2 reef yielded 4J dwts of gold, or an average of 4| ozs to the ton; while that from No. 5 reef yielded 9 dwts., or an average of 9 ozs to the ton. The bodies of stone from which these trials were taken are each four feet thick., The stuff was not selected at all, but merely broked out right across the face, and there was no gold, visible in either lot. The amalgam from the large parcel was not cleaned and put in the retort until half-past nine o'clock, arid, its weight then was 2050z5. The retorting was completed shortly after midnight, and the result from 2 tons 5 cwts was 88 J ozs retorted gold.
