The Evening Star. WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News and the Morning News.

FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1875.

For the cause that lacka a_t3ieta__co, For the lrrony that needs resis _____! B&r the future in the distance. &_ad thes«-_L that we can do.

We observe a letter in the Herald this morning from Mr Crowther having reference to our comments on the action of the City Council in relation to Mr Turner and the street railways. Mr Crowther, we presume , unintentionally, misrepresents what we have advocated when he represents us as urging that we should in seven days tear up the streets, and generally make havoc of everything. What we say and what we said is that the proposals should be receivable either within seven days or several months. Had the date fixed been seven days, Mr Turner would have had an opportunity of making his proposal and supporting it by Such explanations and guarantees, or modifying in such manner, as Councillors might require, and be able to . have some idea of the probable results of his proposal before returning to San Francisco two days later ; nor would there be the least' necessity for the Council to come at once to a decision, or for twelve months thereafter, if so deemed right. By deferring the reception of proposals on the other hand, for three or four months as. we urged, or even for six months, opportunity would be afforded for having proposals from places outside the colony. As .it is, the data is fixed at ■ such a time as to be tantamount to ex-' eluding Mr. Turner and conferring no fair advantages on other possible tenderers, seeing that all who will tender—and that is not many as everyone knows—could as easily ■ have, their proposals ready in one week as in three. As might be expected—and we might add, as was hoped—Mr. Turner will not make a proposal, as probably he is not so green as to think -there would be any advantage in leaving one to be dealt with in his absence, and we shall accordingly see how the public interests will be conserved. Our contention in this is not with Mr Crowther nor any other coach proprietor, but simply that if the project is to be carried out there be^f air play to all, and we would almost add, a little more than ordinary consideration at the hands of the (

imparted to th_lfp_6 much information/.iih the subject. At' all events, he should not have been excluded from opportunity of making proposals. The ready answer is, ',' He is not excluded ; he can leave his proposal." Yes. We know all about that. However, with Mr. Turner out of the field on the one hand, and all excluded who aire not of Auckland on the other, it has been very nicely managed. We do not profess to know who is the fortunate individual or who the parties in the business, but we have no doubt it is all right. We are content.
