CITY COUNCIL.

THE TBAMWAYS. A ppectal meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon, when the question of introducing street railways in Auckland was discussed. Mr W. E. Turner being present. His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Holdship, Hurst, Isaacs, spoke on the subject. His Worship first proposed that a resolution be passed averring that tramways were desirable in Auckland. It was the general opinion of the Councillors present that the resolution arrived at by the Streets Committee was tantamount to an expression of that opinion. After some remarks by Mr Hurst, Mr Turner asked leave to address the Council on his own application. He wished it %a he understood that his- application wo simply to obtain their consent to his making his application before the Superintendent. It would make no difference if there were a. dozen applications sent in. Mr. Turner was gving what in his opinion was the intepretajod of the Act, when he was interrupted by Mr E. Isaacs, who said he did not think the Council wished Mr Turner to explain the Act to them. "Mr Turner then desisted. Councillor Holdship said he apprehended, that really what they wanted to do was to put upon paper the conditions under which they would receive applicants, and then submit to the Superintendent the tender which they thought most calculated for the public good. (Left sitting.)
