A Reduction of Fares Refused!
Tirrc following is the reply received by Mr John Wallace, Flat Bush, the chairman Of the Otahuhu public meeting convened on the 2nd of June to consider the carrying rates on the Auckland and Mercer railway :— "Public Works Offico, " Wellington, June 10, 1575. " Sir, —I am directed by the Hon. Mr. Richardson to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 4th instant, together with the report of the public meeting therein enclosed, and in reply to inform you that the question of rates to be charsed on the Auckland and Mercer railway were fixed ay the result of careful consideration, and that the Government cannot at present see their way to reduce them. After a few months the Government will be able to see how the present tariff works, and if it should then appear desirable to modify the rate 3, Mr. 1-fiehardson will be very glad to recommend the Government to re-con^ider the matter.
