Carnarvon in replying to Earl Shaftesbury in the Lords respecting Fiji stated that the Government had telegraphed to the local authorities to spare neither exertion or expense He expressed greatest confidence in their ability and zeal, and remarked that their home Government was almost powerless in in the event of any sudden emergency. The Privy Council has reversed the decision of the Supreme Court (Sydney) case- Crayfer v. McLean.
